What is this book about?
Unforgettable Faces is a contemporary, realistic portrayal of a nurse practitioner’s day-to-day interactions, relations, and decision-making process with patients, primary care physicians, and specialists in the shadow of managed care. It is an anthology of true clinical cases followed by brief didactic materials.

Who would get the most out of reading this book?
Anyone interested in the medical, financial, ethical, and political issues facing all nursing and nurse practitioner students will find the book interesting What is unique about Unforgettable Faces is the opportunity to observe in a clinical office without truly being there, a chance to hear a history taken that makes an unexpected turn, decifer veiled body language and unusual examininations, and realize diplomacy and compromise are acquired skills that improve with experience.
A lay reader would enjoy the human interest aspects and benefit from updated medical information and support services. It is a good introduction for those who have little background on nurse practitioners and how they fit into the health care team.

Who has endorsed this book?
Unforgettable Faces is endorsed by three well known and respected professional colleagues:

  • Santa J. Crisall, MA, ANP, RNC, Formerly Editorial Director, American Journal of Nursing
  • Linda Pearson, RN, MSN, FNP, Editor-in-Chief, The Nurse Practitioner: The American Journal of Primary Health Care
  • Marie-Eileen Onieal, MMHS, RN, CPNP, President, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners

The following is an excerpt from Ms. Crisall’s endorsement.
Unforgettable Faces offers a realistic view of the professional challenges and issues faced by advanced practice nurses. Using patient vignettes, the authors provide a variety of snapshots of their patients’ clinic visits. These brief presentations offer insight into the clinician’s thinking processes, promoting critical thinking and reflection for the reader. They also adequately credit the vulnerable spirit of one’s clinical confidence when measured against the great responsibility and weight of determining the appropriate differential diagnosis and treatment plan.
Beyond the depiction of realistic situations, the authors take their reflection a step further to help the reader learn and develop their own skills in practice. They do this through panning out from each scenario into an academic discussion of the salient points that were critical to the situation at hand, presenting the critical points within a global and local context with sensitivity to unique cultural consideration and when appropriate, providing the reader with a historical and societal view on the subject....

The text is easy to read and relate to regardless of your positioning on the novice to expert practice continuum. I see this book as an asset for faculty to use to support the clinical experiences of their students and their information-packed lectures. For the student, it provides a self paced reflective visit with a variety of patients and integration of critical and scholarly information that guides practice, professional development, and confidence, in the privacy and comfort of their own home.
This is one book that I could have used at all levels of my educational and practice development. I highly recommend this book for nursing students, practitioners, and faculty. It’s an asset and a complement to our current practice texts.

Can I read an excerpt from Unforgettable Faces?

Here is an excerpt from "She Was So Young Then," a vignette in Chapter 6, Memories Lost, A Broken Mind. Nelly was the wife of Henry Fritz, who brought her to the clinic. Mr. Fritz did most of the talking--at least the talking that made sense.
"Are you my daughter?" Nelly asked me.
"No." I looked at Mr. Fritz for help.
"It’s her mind," he sighed. "Nelly’s loosing her mind." He looked disgraced and disgusted.
"No, I’m not," she argued. "My mind’s as sound as it ever was."
Mr. Fritz shook his head. "She doesn’t see what’s been happening to her," he said to me. "A year ago, it was subtle. I tried to convince myself nothing was wrong."

"What did you notice?" I was a little uncomfortable with Mr. Fritz talking about his wife as though she were not present.
"She became more argumentative and irritable. I thought it was something I was doing, but I wasn’t doing anything different. We’ve been married fifty-two years. I couldn’t explain the change until she started forgetting things. She could tell you a story about twenty years ago like it was yesterday, but if you asked her what she did last night, she couldn’t recall."
"That’s not true," Nelly protested. "He’s lying."
"Shut up, Nelly," Mr. Fritz flashed. His face became plethoric and the vein on his temple stood out momentarily.
...I was concerned about the level of tension between the two. With this much conflict apparent in the office, who knew what was going on at home....
  • Didactic excerpt:
Alzheimer’s disease-- a national burden. The problem caused by dementia becomes clear when the physical, emotional, and financial impact of Alzheimer’s disease on family, friends, and society is considered. Four million people in this country have Alzheimer’s disease and 60 billion dollars a year are spent on it. As the population ages, these numbers will increase. The period of 1990-2000 has been designated as the decade of the brain, a time which has seen the greatest push to conquer Alzheimer’s disease to date. Patients now present to the clinic at the early stages for diagnosis and at later stages for management. The burden is most often on the normal spouse, but sometimes the afflicted patient is abused. This chapter offers insights about the diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease and about recognizing and preventing abuse of the demented patient.
